Commonwealth Election Result
On 24 November, the ALP won the Commonwealth election and will now form government. There are two key implications for the energy sector as a result of this change in Government. AGL estimates that the expansion of the Mandatory Renewable Energy Target to 45,000 GWh will require over 11,600 MW of new renewable capacity and additional investment of around $27 billion by 2020. In addition, emissions trading is to be implemented by 2010.
2007 Election and Climate Change
The Commonwealth election is to be held tomorrow (Saturday 24 November 2007). Both major parties have made significant commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the uptake of clean energy. As Australia’s largest privately owned renewable energy generator, AGL supports the initiatives of both parties in this space. Victorian Premier visits AGL Bogong Power Station Site
On 13 November 2007, the Victorian Premier and Minister for Energy toured the Bogong power station site. This project is the largest hydroelectric project to be undertaken in Australia in 25 years and will be able to generate 140 MW of peaking power. This is enough to power 122,000 homes. The Bogong site is located here. The Premier and Minister enjoyed themselves and learned a great deal from: the local project manager, John Arnold; the head of Brand and External Relations, Emily Kucukalic; and the head of AGL’s Merchant Energy business, Jeff Dimery. The Victorian Government have been very supportive of the project through their Victorian Renewable Energy Target scheme.
The below clip is one of the many pieces of news coverage of the visit.
